- Alendronate (brand name Fosamax) and risedronate (brand name Actonel) are bisphosphonates, drugs that slow the breakdown of bone, prevent fractures, and may increase reverse bone loss.
- Hormone therapy may cause side effects, such as bleeding, bloating, breast tenderness or enlargement, headaches, mood changes, and nausea.
- Calcitonin is a naturally occurring nonsex hormone that increases bone mass in the spine, and is used to treat women who have osteoporosis and who are at least 5 years beyond menopause.
